People were bitten and dying until they look to

The Serpent of Brass

John 3:14 - "And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up."

Jesus gave Nicodemus a sign of his redemptive mission on earth and how it will be accomplished. He marveled at Jesus words and kept observing the Master ministry.

When Nicodemus saw Jesus dying on the cross, at Calvary, his memory went back to that night, and the full light of prophecy filled his mind: this is the Messiah giving His life for the redemption of God’s people. In the open, he came forth with a hundred pound bundle of spices and ointment for the body of Jesus. Together with Joseph of Arimathaea he went to prepare the body of Jesus to be placed in the new tomb. After Christ resurrection, Nicodemus gave his years of life and resources to the fledging Christian church.

In Moses time, as the people journeyed by the way of the Red sea, they forgot the care God had given them with manna, good weather and protection; they began to speak against God and against Moses. As soon as the protective hand of God moved out of the way, “fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.” (Num. 21:6)

After the people repented, God told Moses to set up a fiery serpent, and anyone bitten who looked at the serpent will live. “Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten anyone, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.” (Num. 21:9)

Christ was lifted up on the cross, all our sins were put upon Him; the sins of the whole world were put upon Him. He was the Lamb of God who shed His blood for the sins of the world. His blood, grace and pardon is there for every human being who claimed those gifts on his own life.

When a man bitten by a serpent, and dying, didn’t want to look to the serpent of brass, because he didn’t believe it, by his choice, he died. So it is the same with Christ: “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12) There is salvation when we look to Christ, believe in Him, and love Him with all our hearts, give Him our lives because He gave His life for all of us.

Biblically speaking, at this moment, Christ is officiating as the High Priest in the Heavenly Sanctuary, (Heb. 4:14) and as the Advocate in the Judgment above. "And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world." (1 John 2:1,2) He is looking for the citizens of the kingdom of God. He is writing names in the Book of Life. No one fit for the kingdom of God will enter there because God knows the heart, the thoughts in the mind of each person, and His judgment is true and just.

Just as the dying man bitten by the serpent had a few minutes or seconds to look and to receive life; we may have a few days or years to look for Christ pardon, Christ grace, and to ask Him for power to obey Him now and forever. “That whosoever believed in him should not perish, but have eternal life.” (John 3:15)
